Winchester Hat Fair 2009 Festival Dates: 2nd – 5th July 2009
Hat Fair is Britain's longest running Celebration of Street Arts and Community. In 1974 it started as a buskers' festival where performers passed around a hat to collect a donation after their show — hence the name Hat Fair. The name has stuck and performers are still allowed to Hat, in fact the small-scale circle show is at the heart of the Festival. Now the programme includes innovative community projects, markets, a big picnic, a huge childrens' procession, International large-scale work and commissions, music and large scale spectacular. The only rule is excellence in Outdoor and site specific work. Over the years Hat Fair has developed a dedicated local audience, there is a real sense of ownership and pride in the festival by the Community who get involved through workshops, volunteering or just bringing all their friends. The event is free and contribution is voluntary, thus it is accessible to those of all means on a basis of ‘Pay what you can’. Hat Fair has a unique atmosphere of celebration and vibrancy. It is the only event of its kind in the Winchester calendar.

How about a visit to Hampton Court, not too far and a good mix of subjects including the gardens, historic buildings and interiors. And not a million miles away either.

Walk with local Historian Chris Hare

Post  peterhoniball on Sun Mar 22, 2009 8:51 pm

Chris Hare does walks around Worthing, Tarring and other places over the summer. I am sure if we have enough people we can arrange a group with him.
